He also shows you how Hammons often played thirds and sevenths slightly flat, and trilled the third. Where do you get the name "sawmill" for gDGCD? The traditional favorite “Red Rocking Chair” has been recorded by many people and has some alternate titles (“Honey Babe,” “Ain’t Got no Honey Baby Now,” etc.). Of course, you can also play the sawmill stuff down one string, if you wanna go from G to D…similar to what you can do in standard tuning. e C# F# B C#. It’s unclear from listening to Haley’s recording of “Half Past Four” whether he played it in standard tuning or AEAE but Bruce plays it in AEAE. The rolling parts aren't that hard, actually, but the single string can be a little tricky. Was reminded of it recently & here's a melodic clawhammer interpretation of the tune as I remember it. I felt much safer tuning the strings down rather than up, didn't want to break them!
